@ not so daft - @ have kids to stay overnight. youth groups etc as well as schools http://t.co/6oJLyNaf #SciTeachJC

ooh! “@: NHM has scannable barcodes to access info when back at home. Do other science centres / museums do that? #SciTeachJC?”

RT @: #SciTeachJC discussion sorely in need from input from sci-commers in museums etc. Anyone out there?

@ I don't think it's 90% for kids in US, but I wonder, what's the % of the kids in the Baltimore study? #SciTeachJC

Kids don't get choice to learn (or be taught) science < 16. But if interested, and introduced to learning outside classroom #sciteachjc 1/2

@ you might get some luck if you ask Henry Wellcome and Science Showoff for a RT. #SciTeachJC

#SciTeachJC Hi guys, I'm Planetarium Manager at INTECH Science Centre & Planetarium. Interesting discussion 🙂

@ I agree. Peer pressure would be huge during school trip to ANYWHERE. Less so with family? #SciTeachJC
@DrRacheal
Dr Racheal

then no reason why that can't be a step to life-long learning in science - school trips can start this process off #sciteachjc 2/2

@ I am going to set one of my classes revision by watching v relevant @ episode #SciTeachJC

@ Yes, I think school trips to science museums etc. probably less valuable than trips made on own / with family. #SciTeachJC

#SciTeachJC let's assume that paper is correct. what can we as teachers do to make 'free-choice' stuff more effective?

However, school trips to science museums etc. important for those students whose parents may not ever take them to such places? #SciTeachJC

RT @: #SciTeachJC I think the authors didn't take enough account of interest, visits are voluntary, driven by interest
@A_Weatherall
Alex Weatherall

@ Just wondering whether teachers request info/support in advance of a visit during planning? Or rely on exhibits? #SciTeachJC

#SciTeachJC school trips to Science Centres are important as that way children whose families wouldn't/couldn't bring them get access.

@ @ depends on your family. I come from a long line of geeks so museums were always a big thing #SciTeachJC

#SciTeachJC Also school trips encourage children to ask parents to bring them back another time.

@ Is it our job as teachers to do that, or should the "providers" be thinking more deeply about that? #SciTeachJC

@ Our family museum visits self-directed so more about following established interests/ doing familiar or "fun" things #SciTeachJC
@jackpot73

@ So we need to engage parents to then engage the kids. Money would be a huge issue for that -> TV would be way forward #SciTeachJC

@ School trips to museums begun my love affair with science and nature. Family never wanted to go. #SciTeachJC

@ me too, and probably for many of us here. remember, you could argue we're the 'success stories' in terms of enthusiasm #SciTeachJC

@ When I come across kids that R alrdy interested, I try 2 giv them something a bit harder, that will stretch them. #sciteachjc

Also plenty of places that profess to teach science with agenda (e.g. dinos and cavemen) - some quality control in school 🙂 #sciteachjc

How helpful are programs like STOP For Science (http://t.co/raiBGC8C ) where it's for ISE in schools, but out of class time? #SciTeachJC

So, if you could tell science museums etc. to do one thing to improve their work, what would it be? #SciTeachJC?
@SciTeachJC
Science Teaching JC

#SciTeachJC @ It varies. Some teachers plan and d'load resources, some just turn up! Huge variation.

@ Get students to search net and create an enquiry prac. Might start with "Sci Fair" idea and then tweak a variable #SciTeachJC
@DrRacheal

I was lucky. My family: museum mad - so got plenty of opportunity. But not same for all. School starts the learning off. #sciteachjc

@ Take some programs/materials outside of their walls, into parks, malls, libraries? Or even science festivals? #SciTeachJC

Some of my most engaged and willing to do outside science are weakest academically - Bang goes the Theory wonderful homework #SciTeachJC
