@ have kids do it? assign exhibits, research + review '3 good links' or similar? (then send link to @!) #SciTeachJC
@ surely phones just a quick, easy way to access content? a portal, not an end in itself? #SciTeachJC
@ @ #SciTeachJC science in parks sounds good and can be close to real out of city experience for urban children.
I think tonight's #sciteachjc paper shows a worrying anti-school bias.
#SciTeachJC How to make science in middle/high schools more 'fun,' meaningful, relevant? Sounds like questions other disciplines ask too 🙂
RT @: I think tonight's #sciteachjc paper shows a worrying anti-school bias.
Just because you spend 95% of your time outside school, it doesn't mean you learn more about science outside school. #sciteachjc
Anyone agree / disagree with @'s comment that tonight's #SciTeachJC paper has an anti-schools bias?
Do others here have issues with SLT seeing the benefit of museum/science centre visits? How can we get more out of visits? #SciTeachJC
@ I would murder someone if - in exchange - the BBC would pay me to make the UK version of Mythbusters. #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC I've certainly not implied schools aren't doing a good job!
RT @: #SciTeachJC How to make science in middle/high schools more 'fun,' meaningful, relevant? Sounds like questions other ...
@ I'd love to do more. But paperwork, arguing with other departments etc makes it a lot of work for the payoff. #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC didn't they do something like this on a cookery show a few months back?
@ I agree. 95% outside school during lifetime. But most children's science education grounding takes place at school. #sciteachjc
Should schools work more closely with science centres. etc. to maximise benefits of trips? #SciTeachJC? Or not possible in time available?
@ @ Dude! I do that in my classroom 😀 (Mythbuster investigations not murder people :-P) #SciTeachJC
RT @: Hi all, I'm a science teacher (Biology @ A Level) and I work in the home counties #SciTeachJC
RT @: Should schools work more closely with science centres. etc. to maximise benefits of trips? #SciTeachJC? Or not possible i ...
@ Hmmmm... they're pretty much banned where I am #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC discussion seems to be advocating allowing students to use their mobile phones on school trips 😉
If schools didn't exist, & kids had 2 learn abt science purely informally, wht wld science centres & museums do differently? #sciteachjc
@ surely this is why museums etc have schools outreach staff? maybe we need to get them here, to #asechat or similar? #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC Time seems to be a big problem when "teaching to the test" so how much of this is policy-related?
@ In advance of the visit - Is there time available? Or at least to access all the resources the centres have already. #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC discussion sorely in need from input from sci-commers in museums etc. Anyone out there?
@ Dangerous...;) Also, assuming kids are in schools that can afford the trips, and have kids that can all afford cells? #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC are we looking at this the wrong way? should we be finding out how to set kids up so they can better access all this as adults?
RT @: #SciTeachJC discussion sorely in need from input from sci-commers in museums etc. Anyone out there?
@ I think trips to scimus etc the perfect antidote to diadactic teaching. Discovery and investigation at students pace. #sciteachjc
@ Phone ownership amongst students must surely be in excess of 90% these days? #SciTeachJC
@ maybe @ could pass the word - kids *part* of public, after all, and most of public were at school once #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC They've all gone off to spend a night in their museums (UK time that is)?
@ If I were a cynic, I might say you have a rather idealistic vision of school trips 😉 #SciTeachJC
Many museums (e.g. @) have different language info for kids/adults - and the kids read fully, adults skim over #SciTeachJC
Suspect experience of going on *school* trip to a science museum etc. is different to benefits of going alone / with family? #SciTeachJC
@ No more idealistic than the authors of paper conclusions on learning science outside the classroom 😉 #sciteachjc #perfectworld
School trip is not a choice - I think *choice* is a key thing here. #SciTeachJC
RT @: School trip is not a choice - I think *choice* is a key thing here. #SciTeachJC
The 'science for all' comminuty can occasionally show sci teachers innovative ways of engaging kids... (1/2) #sciteachjc
#SciTeachJC we will soon begin to set experiences for homework. Watch a documentary, go to museum etc. aim is to engage pupils in subject
@ #SciTeachJC yes but sometimes parents have to choose for their children as well.
...But it is very very arrogant of tonight's #sciteachjc paper to claim that they teach more about science than school teachers do. (2/2)
