Archive: Meeting Seven – Classroom Demonstrations
@ Some of my classrooms have students on the front desk. Some classroom design is not good #sciteachjc
@ I sometimes ask kids to justify what they would gain from doing prac, we've built up a list of possible reasons. #SciTeachJC
@ That's been my argument for a long time - that a lot of crap practical work can be replaced by good demonstrations. #SciTeachJC
@ not sure about improving learning with demos, but it would save time: students struggle to get organised personally. #SciTeachJC
@ @ physics teachers don't know they're born ... imagine how awkward fume cupboards are for demos 😀 #sciteachjc
Further to @'s tweet, are high school teachers actually better at teaching Physics than university lecturers? #SciTeachJC
I often get kids to do demos to class. Everyone has to concentrate and take part. #SciTeachJC

@ Question is - can you put time to better use in terms of learning outcomes for students? If so, do demos. #SciTeachJC
@ yeah, but glowing in the dark after several years as the radiation bod isn't fun either! #SciTeachJC
RT @: Potentially controversial thought: just how much class practical could we replace and improve upon with well done demos? ...

RT @: #SciTeachJC I love the *WOW* factor you can get with demos. Kids ask how? Why? They will remember those demos forever.
@ what practical would you scrap in favour of a demo? #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC it would be interesting to consider the 5-10 most time-wasting pracs to replace with good demos. Any ideas?
.@ Sure, kids remember demos forvever, but they don't remember the *science* behind the demos. #SciTeachJC
@ @ Surely they are? At least teachers have been trained to teach, lecturers haven't. #SciTeachJC

demos fill several niches in sci ed. I like to think of them in some circumstances as edu-tainment #SciTeachJC
A memorable demo is not the same things as good demo. Remembering a demo is not same as learning the science about the demo #SciTeachJC
@ @ Ha! And if you have to use a fume cupboard it will have to be a demo! #SciTeachJC
@ we used to secretly slip the sources into each others pockets to see how long we could cook each others' balls 😛 #sciteachjc
#sciteachJC Have to run to a meeting but it has been great to even just catch the beginning of the chat. Thanks!
Am sure lots of people remember seeing the Thermit reaction at school. Bet lots can't tell what it was supposed to teach them. #SciTeacHJC

@ I'll trade your fume cupboard for my animal house demonstrating trimming sheeps feet @ @ #SciTeachJC
#sciteachjc I like doing silent demos of prac procedure and getting kids to write up method. Helps memorise a method e.g. GCSE Flametests
@ I agree, memorable demos last forever, but as long as the science lasts til the next exam we've done our jobs. #SciTeachJC
@ @ Depends on context. Wow demos with good discussion around them. Must be well planned. #SciTeachJC
@ I'll sometimes get the kids to play 'consequences' after demo - first writes first step, then passes on to next, etc #SciTeachJC
hi, secondary chemistry #pgce student here, having just done a quick skim of the paper & discussion so far #SciTeachJC
