Welcome to this evening's #SciTeachJC meeting. We're discussing this paper: http://t.co/DmSh8U2z by Crouch, Fagen, Callan and Mazur.

Hello #SciTeachJC, I'm a Physics teacher from London. I think demonstrations *can* be both more useful and easier than whole class practical
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

botheration forgot about #SciTeachJC *again* stoopid #pgce, to busy to actually do any thinking. Will look forward to reading tweets later

Hi #sciteachjc. #NQT physics teacher from Yorkshire here. When I read the paper, the first thing I thought of was IOP: "What Happens Next"
@A_Weatherall
Alex Weatherall

Hi #SciTeachJC, I'm a sci teacher educator and I try to help my students learn how to use demos well. Excited to learn from you!
@mcshanahan
marieclaire shanahan

@ reply to pt 1) I hate doing demos as the room set up means only a few students can see. Room arrangement is poor. #SciTeachJC

@ What's preventing you from re-arranging seating etc. so all students *can* see? #SciTeachJC
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

#SciTeachJC I am def a fan of using prediction w/ demos. Does anyone else use the Predict, Observe, Explain framework w students?
@mcshanahan
marieclaire shanahan

@ fixed octagon benches with no moveable central desk at all, plus service pods blocking the view #SciTeachJC
@hrogerson
Helen Rogerson

I use POE/PEOE (predict, explain prediction, observe, predict) with demos, unless I want dramatic effect of just showing first. #SciTeachJC
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

@ @ I get them out of their seats - wakes them up, and makes questioning more interactive. #sciteachjc

@ Thanks - yes of course, I still fall back on the old name POE but use it the way that you described 🙂 #sciteachJC

@hrogerson

@ like me, you're forgetting the #sciteachjc tag 🙂
@A_Weatherall

I often treat demo as minilesson-"what you are looking for" (objectives) "predictions?" (prior learning) "why DID that happen?" #sciteachjc
@declanfleming
Declan Fleming

@ the students have to pack in and end up poking, squabbling and moaning! #SciTeachJC
@hrogerson
Helen Rogerson

1) I like a mixture of demos and hands-on/minds-on. 2)Yes 3)No (but surprised that discussion was relatively small boost) #SciTeachJC

Surely only *really* poor teachers *just* show demo? I mean, who does demo without discussion? #SciTeachJC
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

@ we have the BIG light demo kit, that is useful, and using animations on board helps. Not all a lost cause. #SciTeachJC
@hrogerson
Helen Rogerson

@ yes some rooms like that... - what about camera to whiteboard? #sciteachjc
@A_Weatherall
Alex Weatherall

@ I was surprised too that the disc didn't add much. I wldn't mind knowing more abt exactly what they meant. #sciteachjc
@mcshanahan
marieclaire shanahan

#SciTeachJC sometimes I'll get kids to predict what *kind* of thing they are looking for, rather than the specific change

#SciTeachJC ie show them equipment, ask them what measurements, how big a change, factors...

demos CAN just be bit of fun / provide context. I start balancing with pringles can, by end kids tell me mix for bottle rocket #sciteachjc
@declanfleming
Declan Fleming

Love to play #SciTeachJC but have to teach. Demo w/o pred big on bang, small on learning. Pred focuses Ss attn, makes Ss care about result.
@polarisdotca
Peter Newbury

@ no front table except small computer bench, so camera wouldn't reach. #SciTeachJC
@hrogerson
Helen Rogerson

@ That's a great idea. Do you find it esp helpful when they don't nec have background to predict the exact change? #sciteachJC

Reading the paper for #sciteachjc it didn't focus on SEN student or the reasons why you might demo. Compliments discussion work too

Paper didn't really go into value of entertainment as a teaching tool. Getting emotional engagement also important? #SciTeachJC
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

important point is that you're honest with yourself about PURPOSE of demo. Sometimes we kid ourselves .. like with practical 😉 #sciteachjc
@declanfleming
Declan Fleming

@ Ya, that makes sense. I'll pass that on to my students! #sciteachJC
@mcshanahan

I go to town with demos in terms of making them entertaining. Tell stories around them etc #SciTeachJC Felt paper could have touched on that

#SciTeachJC does anyone else get kids to do 'minidemos' to small group, inc predictions/explanations? marketplace style?

Potentially controversial thought: just how much class practical could we replace and improve upon with well done demos? #SciTeacHJC
@alomshaha
Alom Shaha

@ very much so - exploding can etc, patter is very important. no shocked reponse, just quiet smile as kids go 'WOW' #SciTeachJC

#SciTeachJC I love the *WOW* factor you can get with demos. Kids ask how? Why? They will remember those demos forever.
