Archive: Meeting One – ‘Doing’ science versus ‘being’ a scientist
RT @: Weclome to all joining the first #SciTeachJC Please use the hashtag for the discussion tonight. Paper is here: http://t. ...
I'm joining the #sciteachjc discussion tonight. I teach Physics at a secondary comp. in London.
Any of my few followers not interested in teaching please tune out of my tweets over the next hour #sciteachjc
I'm in too! I teach biology at an FE college in London. #sciteachjc
It's good to be here at the first #sciteachjc - also a physics teacher, midlands secondary comp.
@ stands up at #sciteachjc: Good evening, I'm a science/teaching nerd. Oops, wrong meeting...
I'm happy to be joining in the first #sciteachjc. I'm a sci ed professor in Canada and former physics and general sci teacher.
a comment *about* the paper, rather than on it - a refreshing, challenging change to deciphering exam specifications! #sciteachjc
@ Yes - made v interesting reading, as have been asked to chair committee on maximising female achievement! #sciteachjc
@ Hard to say as I teach KS5, but have noticed gender and cultural differences in attitude. #SciTeachJC
@ i used some of the ideas from IOP Girls In Physics report in recent action research - wish I'd read this paper too #sciteachjc
I work in primaries as well as secondaries .. would agree that the kids seem reprasentative of those I've worked with #sciteachjc
once i'd deciphered language, I found it a useful way to consider my students, past and present. certainly matches what i see. #SciTeachJC
Am guilty of referring to "brilliant" boys and "hard-working" girls - ashamed to have had that pointed out to me. #sciteachjc
@ Seems as though girls put more effort in - more meet homework deadlines, many boys show flashes of understanding #SciTeachJC
@ Reflects my exp well-I started doing research to understand stud'ts who did well but felt they cldn't BE scientific #sciteachjc
I am not a teacher, but I am studying engagement of publics with science. Also, I am eating pizza #sciteachjc
@ Could be - one of my hardest-working boys tries to make it look effortless! #SciTeachJC
@ are boys defining their identity by being not-girls, so if girls work hard, they don't? #sciteachjc
@ Interesting observation - I hadn't thought of that! #sciteachjc
@ Real issue w/ girls not doing physics - even at my all-girls 6th form there were 4 A2s, compared to 50 in bio #SciTeachJC
@ I'm not surprised - that rings true w my exp as well. Any of the reasons seem related to findings here? #sciteachjc
Hello all at #sciteachjc am interested research scientist, no formal teaching experience, but bits of engagement. Going to lurk and learn!
@ Do the physicists show the most masculine behaviour? I remember being quite a "tomboy". #sciteachjc
@ my initial thoughts are that I'm not surprised. #sciteachjc
@ i was intrigued by approach in paper of interviews in both mixed + singlesex groups - wonder if diff attitudes expressed? #SciTeachJC
Can we challenge the prejudices some children have about a “science identity” being “undesirable” or even “unthinkable”? #sciteachjc
@ Far fewer girls in physics. Bio and chem about equal. Girls make up A-levels with psych/soc. #SciTeachJC
@ doing something (eg. an experiment) and identifying as a member of a social group seem to me to be very different #sciteachjc
@ #sciteachjc Children seem to love Science until the end of Year 7 then some of the wow factor wears off for some children.
@ Probably doesn't help that bio teachers all female, physics teachers all male, and chemistry one of each! #SciTeachJC
Are any of the authors of the paper here? Or any others who work in science education research? #sciteachjc
@ @ I hate that my Yr11s didn't want to do Biology A2 as it won't be "respected" as much as Physics #SciTeachJC
@ @ bias well established, lots of explanations. we're odd, i've >1/3 girls @ AS (but will have less A2) #SciTeachJC
@ i wondered about that - in exit questionnaire kids explicitly denied was a factor in choices. #SciTeachJC
@ I'm here! Not an author on this paper but do similar research in identity. (have cited this paper before) #sciteachjc
@ That's really sad! Guess more about the "bangs and explosions" #SciTeachJC
@ not sure, surely is a good incentive to look out and target suggestions for role models. #sciteachJC
I found all the stuff about identity in the paper really interesting. #sciteachjc
Regarding the paper I wondered whether the longitudinal study sample size (42 🙂 ) was big enough to draw conclusions? #SciTeachJC
@ wonder if equiv research for doing/being exists for other subject areas - art, music, drama perhaps? #SciTeachJC
@ Hi. I'm here - just enjoying the conversation.#SciTeachJC
@ but to be fair, *I* like to make things go bang too... #SciTeachJC
RT @: Can we challenge the prejudices some children have about a “science identity” being “undesirable” or even “unthi ...
@ it's qualitative research, so n has less import than insights into how they construct their identity. #sciteachjc
I genuinely think we need more career awareness earlier in our lessons (if not already doing so) to address some of these issues #sciteachjc
@ I hope you're not about to suggest that biology is easier than physics! 😉 #sciteachjc
We are lucky enough to have one of the authors, @ here tonight! #sciteachjc
@ several of my yr12s will be dropping physics as planning on medicine. think they're optimistic though... #SciTeachJC
@ @ Confession: read half of it. Was on coach, had to read so closely I started to feel ill... #disorganised #SciTeachJC
@ I worried about this too - but also I had concerns about geographic bias studying only London schools #sciteachJC

Paper made me think that we should perhaps do more to raise awareness of *variety* of science-based careers from young age #sciteachjc
@ i'm not an expert of education, but certainly such divides exist in other areas of social science. #sciteachjc
@ for example, most people who enjoy making people laugh do not identify as comedians #sciteachjc
@ careers stuff was something came up in actions research - did some resources/activities 4 kids (PSHE not helpful) #SciTeachJC
RT @: Paper made me think that we should perhaps do more to raise awareness of *variety* of science-based careers from young ag ...
@ @ I know someone doing similar work in hist & citizenship ed but I'm sure it wld apply to others #sciteachjc
@ I will have to confess the same, but read on train with similar effect 🙂 #SciTeachJC
Re identity - I see a lot of parental influence in south asian students, as identified in study. "We want him to study medicine" #sciteachjc
@ my question is whether increasing the breadth of identity would increase its attractiveness? #sciteachjc
Seems that "bangs" and "explosions" have limited appeal. What appeals to older students and how do we do more of that? #sciteachjc
Absolutely MT @ We should do more to raise awareness of *variety* of science-based careers from young age #sciteachjc
Regarding identity: do teachers also identify themselves with their specialism (and effect a bias) when teaching science? #SciTeachJC
@ @ question: how many people identify as "scientific citizens"? #sciteachjc
@ @ piece @ had in guardian raised Q about purpose of sci vs others - doing or learning about? #SciTeachJC
