Archive: Meeting Two – Beyond 2000
Welcome to 2nd meeting of #SciTeachJC. Please use the hashtag to say hello and let us know your here. Coming up: today's discussion points
Trying to join in #SciTeachJC with 5 month old sitting on my knee - will see how it goes!
Discussion points for tonight: 1) What bits of the "Beyond 2000" report do you agree / disagree with most strongly? #SciTeachJC
#sciteachjc what do people think of the new changes to the syllabus?
Discussion points for tonight: 2) Why do you think this report was so influential? #SciTeachJC
RT @: Discussion points for tonight: 2) Why do you think this report was so influential? #SciTeachJC
Discussion points for tonight: 3) Are the arguments still valid today? Could the same critique be mounted again? #SciTeachJC
Keeping an eye on #SciTeachJC, although I'm not a science teacher could argue I'm a science communicator tho'
4) What does the report fail to say? (What would you include in the report if you were writing it today?) #SciTeachJC
evening all at #SciTeachJC... midlands secondary teacher here.
@ #SciTeachJC unfortunately I have no idea what that policy/document is!
Hello #SciTeachJC, I'm a Physics teacher at a north London comp.
#SciTeachJC Hello all. I think recommendationt 10, about trialling changes to the curriculum is fundamental. Slows political change.
Goood evening #sciteachjc, science and society postgrad student (OU) here from north kent.
#SciTeachJC Does first few minutes remind anyone else of the scene in Ender's Game where all the kids show up in the simulator? #nojustme
hi #SciTeachJC from trainee science teacher to be (starting PGCE in September)
Hi #sciteachjc I teach science communication at Imperial - a lot of my MA dissertation (back in 2004) considered your discussion point 2!
#SciTeachJC I agree strongly with idea that gcse science has lost its way - is trying to teach 'science for future scientists' to all kids
@ Yeah - would you say that a lot of the Beyond2000 ideas have been imported from the States? #sciteachjc
@ Report said nothing about new techs. If same report was done today it'd be interesting to see how they were treated. #SciTeachJC
#sciteachjc agree with the first point, general sci lit is important. Sci is to big to focus on one part pre/post 16
Was impact of report more deeply felt in state sector cos private schools chose not to do pot-2006 GCSEs and did IGCSE instead #SciTeachJC
RT @: @ Report said nothing about new techs. If same report was done today it'd be interesting to see how they were treate ...
#SciTeachJC Never read paper before & teach IGCSE now, but like the emphasis on stories. I think this is very important.
@ #SciTeachJC agree - is far too easy to get bogged down in detail/facts. of course gov't encourage that via targets/tables
@ Do you think "Scientific literacy" is a useful concept? Can it really be "taught" to all students? #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC It worries me how few LT team members responsible for science in schools have read Beyond2000.
@ @ Beyond2000 addressed the need to teach scientific literacy for the first time. #sciteachjc Bother. Should have done the reading for #SciTeachJC. Could have joined in from the train.
There was a problem connecting to Twitter.
@: I think the impact of this report was barely felt in independent schools; for example HSW is absent from IGCSE. #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC i think report really shows that harking back to 'golden age' of education really misses point, can't replicate for 100% of pop
@ What do you like about "emphasis on stories"? Is that a feature of your current teaching? #SciTeachJC
@ Are you following #sciteachjc at the moment? It's just started.
Incredibly arrogant of Beyond2000 to assume that science teachers have been doing it all wrong since the 1960s. #sciteachjc
@ disagree - it was so successful b/c it wasn't for the first time (tho I agree, it was new to some, and that helped) #SciTeachJC
@ assumption that a higher percentage of those kids might need the 'sci for scientists' aspect instead of gen. sci literacy? #SciTeachJC
@ Now you've read the report. What are your thoughts about HSW? #SciTeachJC
@: Did anyone else notice that the page numbers in the 'Beyond 2000' report start at 2000? #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC Hi. I was a scientist and science teacher in the US. Loved the idea of presenting science in historical context.
I think the teaching for scientific literacy aspect has been lost as we have started to push for more kids to do triple science. #sciteachjc
@ yes 🙂 that sort of year 2000 branding looks so cute these days #sciteachjc
#SciTeachJC - I think Beyond 2000 was so influential b/c it was rooted in some old, established ideas, yet nodded to range of stakeholders
#SciTeachJC @ not as such, but having a good understanding of basic facts/terminology + being able to question other work from pre
My idea of "scientific literacy" is that there are facts that people must know, or they are illiterate. Not sure that's helpful? #sciteachjc
#SciTeachJC @ 1 bit 4 me really dated it, talk re 'video recorders' as modern tech. ironically highlighted point re pace of change
@ OCR's 21st Century Science tried to make use of "stories" in its course. Not sure teachers *got* it. #SciTeachJC
@ How much science content is needed for a person to be scientifically literate? Prob quite a lot. #sciteachjc
@ that sounds more like critical thinking than science literacy (as I understand it) #sciteachjc
I too like emphasis on stories & "big picture" , but have some concern about focus on history/sociology of science #SciTeachJC
@ I think Beyond 2000 has a slightly modified idea of scientific literacy, remember issue of 'stories' #sciteachjc
@ #sciteachjc I like stories in science too. Helps connect to personal side of how science proceeds #sciteachjc
Hi all! @ I'd add in to that the level of science and its application needed in order to function in society. #sciteachjc
@ Not sure that's what the authors of the report would think of as "scientific literacy" #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC stories are v useful in short term, i think we need to be more explicit in using them to show big picture with kids
@ Many teachers would agree. Why do you think report auhtors felt it necessary to make it taught explicitly / separately? #SciTeachJC
#SciTeachJC.Thought point about number of sci graduates needed was interesting.Harks back to general qs of what should aim of sci ed be?
#SciTeachJC I think we forget how far we have moved in the last 5 years Might not be taught or assessed very well but SC1 is stronger now
RT @: Hello #SciTeachJC, I'm a Physics teacher at a north London comp.
@ But haven’t we been here before with historical case studies (like, in the 1970’s). #sciteachjc
@ What do you think of HSW? Do you think it should be taught explicitly? #SciTeachJC
@ @ @ more an understanding of science as a process rather than science as facts? #sciteachjc
To me Science Literacy is not about facts, it is about understanding methods #SciTeachJC
@ #SciTeachJC not seen OCR, but some of the AQA hsw's is quite good. As it stands there should be more input from employers,
#SciTeachJC. TBH I probably needed Beyond 2000 etc to remind me that my chem graduate view of Sci isn't relevant to large number of my kids.
@ Why do you think SC1 stronger? In what way? #SciTeachJC
@ I'd understand 'sci lit' as skills/understanding of HSW needed to decode sci/tech in daily life. equiv to ICT-lit. #SciTeachJC
RT @: To me Science Literacy is not about facts, it is about understanding methods #SciTeachJC
@ #sciteachjc but look at the exams. They've hardly changed at all, so the teachers don't see the need to vary their lessons.
@ @ @ Yes - being able to identify correlation v causation, look at evidence etc. #sciteachjc
@ something is easy for us all to forget! lose track in enthusiasm of kids' level. #SciTeachJC
RT @: @ #sciteachjc but look at the exams. They've hardly changed at all, so the teachers don't see the need to vary thei ...
#SciTeachJC @ I also like idea of teaching more about history of sci plus agree with @ - adds relevance to topics?
@ yes I thought that too. My experience of learning science & my attitudes to it are not those of most kids (then or now) #SciTeachJC
@ I think that humanizing science with stories is particularly important for getting girls interested. #sciteachjc
@ @ But the exams did change - we have questions which explicitly test HSW #SciTeachJC
@ v good point - these skills much harder to assess, so gov't effectively causes teachers/schools to ignore them #SciTeachJC
RT @: #SciTeachJC. TBH I probably needed Beyond 2000 etc to remind me that my chem graduate view of Sci isn't relevant to large n ...
@ Good teachers include HSW anecdotes in a context of traditional pedagogy. #sciteachjc
@ I like the line "to produce a populace comfortable, competent and confident w/ scientific and technical matters" #SciTeachJC
@ that's an interesting thought; do boys not respond as well to narratives? #sciteachjc
RT @: @ I like the line "to produce a populace comfortable, competent and confident w/ scientific and technical matter ...
@ @ @ @: I think the idea of "science as a process" is an important one. #SciTeachJC
.@ I think "nature of science" is a better way of putting it - methods is too narrow. #sciteachjc
@ If I could just give them the skills to tell when a news story was rubbish, or to analyse claims of alt med! #sciteachjc
@ #sciteachJC They also give insight into the good (and bad) side of how science proceeds. The Double Helix, e.g. #sciteachjc
@ as in the excellent 'unnatural nature of science'? great book to loan to able kids... #SciTeachJC
@ #sciteachjc not many. and lots of them are rubbish. general Einstein question expected response "thought experiments". end.
Okay so for all science teachers on #twitter the #SciTeachJC has begun. Follow the hashtag to participate.
